Fire crews tackle the blaze at The Stow – Pic: Paul Wood
A SHOP in The Stow has been destroyed by a fire caused by an overloaded electrical socket.
Firefighters were called to the blaze at Taste Buds, a take-away shop on the industrial estate, at 5am on Monday morning and found it completely ablaze.
It took crews from Harlow, Old Harlow and Sawbridgeworth over an hour to put out the flames.
The Environment Agency was informed of the incident as an asbestos roof was also damaged during the fire.
Firefighters tackled the fire from above as well as on the ground to prevent the flames from spreading from the ground floor, mid-terrace shop to adjoining shops.
Harlow station manager Andy Senior said: "We have determined that this fire was not deliberate and most likely caused by an electrical fire caused by overloading a socket with appliances.
"It shows how easily an overloaded socket can lead to tragedy. People should be careful not to overload sockets in homes as they are the major causes of fires in homes and in businesses.

I agree with everything the experts above say. I want to add that still this fire may have been preventable because whatever was using electricity would have been turned off by the SmokeShutoff(TM) Power Strip at the first sign of smoldering and then the socket would no longer have been overloaded.
