Overheated batteries sparked a garage fire at a home Wednesday evening in Mesa, displacing four residents and causing $50,000 in damage, officials said.

The fire started about 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of East Gary, Mesa fire Deputy Chief Mike Dunn said.

Firefighters contained the blaze in about 15 minutes and keep it from spreading to the house, Dunn said.

The residents stayed with neighbors, Dunn said.

I am betting the batteries were being charged. If you're going to leave batteries hooked up to a charger, use my power strip.
